Short description:
In 1899, the Russian Egyptologist Vladimir Golenishchev (1856-1947) published his translation of a papyrus containing the Egyptian tale of a shipwrecked mariner. He associated the incense-producing island mentioned in this tale with the island of Soqotra.
On the basis of Golenishchev's theory, Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) develops his theory of the early history of the Land of Frankincense (South Arabia, Somalia and Soqotra): he identifies the island described by the Greek historian Diodorus using its Egyptian name 'Panchaea' with the frankincense-producing island of 'Pa-anch'.
Glaser seeks to demonstrate that the early name of Soqotra was 'Pa-anch' and based on 'Pônech' - i.e. 'the Punic Island' and that the original inhabitants of Soqotra were Phoenicians.
