Short description:
Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) published this article in the run-up of his third journey to Yemen (April 1885-February 1886), i.e. 12 years after the Turks had returned to the highlands of Yemen with the aim of reestablishing their dominance over the country in response to urgent appels of the reigning imam.
The explorer remarks that Arabs are generally less privileged compared to Turks which, in turn affects the social fabric of the Yemeni society. According to his observations, the differences between the social classes are less pronounced than they used to be, as 'the Turks do not mind mixing themselves with outcasts by marrying low-cast women'.
Eduard Glaser also looks at the contrasts in social organisation between urban and rural areas.
