Short description:
This obituary of Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), 'the most successful explorer of Arabia', written by Otto Weber (1877-1928), Assyriologist and director of the 'Vorderasiatisches Museum' (Museum of the Ancient Near East) from 1912 to 1928, which is part of the State Museums in Berlin, takes a look at Eduard Glaser's formative years in what is now the Czech Republic.
Weber reports that Glaser's hope of obtaining the means for a carefree life in the service of science was not fulfilled and that the scholar's bitterness grew over the years: 'Even his most loyal friends sometimes suffered greatly from his pathologically increased mistrust.'
