Short description:
With the sudden death of the well-known explorer on May 7th, 1908, a great and brilliant scholar and an outstanding human being has passed away', this is how Fritz Hommel (1854-1936), professor of Semitic languages at the University of Munich, begins his eulogy for Eduard Glaser (1855-1908).
He describes Glaser as 'a good-natured, kind and touchingly modest person'. 'For this very reason, and because he was aware of his hard work and his achievements, he felt every slight and belittling all the more keenly. He did not receive the recognition he deserved, and gradually became so sensitive and bitter that even his friends sometimes found it difficult to dispel his mistrust.
... His rich scholarly legacy will, especially if it falls into the right hands, open up new perspectives for Semitic studies and provide a wealth of fresh material of inestimable value.'
