'My dear friend! Mr. Glaser has been to see me & I called immediately to see the Count, having first spoken to Hofraths Bühler & Benndorf. The count was very good & I begged him if possible to see Mr. Gl. & judge for himself.
Hofr. Benndorf was with the Count also after me & invited Mr. Gl. to go & see the Count to-day from 2-3 p.m. But he first called to see Hofr. Benndorf, who could not quite promise all Mr. Glaser wanted. ... I cannot tell you how disappointed I am. I said he ought to have gone & to have acted diplomatically. Now he is so angry & wants to become a German subject; but if he changes, he better go to England.
... Now I fear all is over here, & I only ... this, of course not against Mr. Gl, but to show you how strongly I support your wish & now I fear, Mr. Gl. has spoilt all himself. God bless you. Yours faithfully W.H. Hechler'
Short description:
William Henry Hechler (1845–1931), chaplain of the British Embassy in Vienna, expresses his disappointment at Eduard Glaser's undiplomatic approach to Austrian officials in the context of the sale of his collections originating from his fourth journey to Yemen.
He regrets that Glaser did not contact Count Latour, but rather dealt with Otto Benndorf (1838-1907) and Georg Bühler (1837-1898) to negotiate a solution to his claims.
