The Department of Oriental Antiquities of the Louvre holds an important collection of ancient objects from the Arabian Peninsula. They bear witness to the region's past and remain little known. The majority of the collection consists of inscriptions in Ancient South Arabian languages spoken by the inhabitants of the region between the 8th century BCE and the beginning of Islam.
276 inscriptions were collected by Eduard Glaser during his first trip to Yemen (Oct. 1882 - March 1884) - see Otto Weber 'Eduard Glasers Forschungsreisen in Südarabien', p. 7. In July 1884, four stones bearing Ancient South Arabian inscriptions (GL 16, GL 211, GL 213, GL 274) enriched the Louvre's collection of ancient objects (p. 85, p. 87).
Descriptions of the original stones discovered by Eduard Glaser can be also retrieved in 'Nouvelles Études sur l'Épigraphie du Yémen: Les Monuments Sabéens et Ḥimyarites de Paris' by Joseph and Hartwig Derenbourg.
