Kai Drewes' study deals with the practice of awarding titles of nobility to Jews in Prussia, Austria and Great Britain as well as with the transfer of titles across national borders in 19th-century Europe. It provides an insight into the self-perception and perception by others of Jewish upper middle-classes with a desire for nobilitation.
19th-century Austria was comparatively liberal in awarding aristocratic titles to Jews, for there existed a policy of nobilitating individuals as a reward for their contribution to the Austrian economy.
The ennoblement of Samuel Horowitz (1841-1924), landowner, industrial magnate and chairman of the Jewish Community in Lviv, in 1894 is of particular interest, since it appears to be related in some way with the intention of an 'unknown patron' to acquire Eduard Glaser's collection of Arabic manuscripts and donate it to the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Education in return for an elevation to peerage.
