The present volume focuses on aspects of Islamic thought in Iran and Yemen, and other regions of the Middle East, ninth through fifteenth century CE, through a close study of manuscript materials. The book's sixteen chapters are arranged under five rubrics: Mu'tazilism, Zaydism in Iran and in Yemen, Twelver Shi'ism, Mysticism, and Bibliographical Traditions.
Chapter 1 traces the history of the scholarly investigation of Muʿtazilism and provides information on Eduard Glaser's role as collector of Arabic manuscripts (pp. 3-4) which practically laid the foundation for the exploration of the Muʿtazilite kalām writings.
The collection of manuscripts brought together by Eduard Glaser during his four journeys to Yemen in 1882–84, 1885–86, 1887–88, and 1892–94, was sold to: 1) the 'Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin' (nowadays Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) (265 manuscripts), 2) the 'British Museum' in London (328 manuscripts), and 3) the 'Austrian National Library' in Vienna (282 manuscripts).
