Contents:
Basing himself on some of his records taken during his travels in North Africa and Yemen (1882-1884), Eduard Glaser introduces the reader to the two largest denominations of Islam, the Sunnis and the Shiites. He not only explains the differences in the religious belief of the two groups, but also provides information about their spread in the Arab World and India, paying particular attention to the Zaydīs in Yemen.
Eduard Glaser recommends not underestimating the ability of the Turkish authorities to deal adequately with phenomena such as Mahdist movements that 'threaten orthodox Muslim countries that are under European rule such as Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia and India'. (p. 4)
