In 1898 David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912), professor of Semitic languages at the University of Vienna, was appointed leader of the Imperial Academy's expedition to South Arabia alongside Carlo Landberg, a German-Swedish Arabist (1848-1924). The expedition was marked by an increasing conflict between the two co-leaders (mainly over difficulties to travel to the centre of South Arabia) which led to Count Landberg's resignation.
The present publication is based on various correspondence between relevant stakeholders of the expedition. Originally, the letters were not meant to be published. However, D.H. Müller eventually chose to share them with the public in order to defend himself from accusations spread by his former co-leader.
