This article deals with the preservation and digitisation of Yemeni manuscripts which enables scholars to (re)discover a uniquely rich intellectual treasure of Yemen.
The author highlights Eduard Glaser's role as collector of Arabic manuscripts: the Austrian scholar visited Yemen on four occasions (1882–84, 1885–86, 1887–88 and 1892–94 and sold the collections of his first 2 journeys to the 'Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin' (today's Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin); the collection stemming from his 3rd trip was acquired by the British Museum in London (328 manuscripts), and the collection of manuscripts brought together during his 4th journey was purchased by the then Imperial Court Library (todays 'Österreichische Nationalsbibliothek') in Vienna.
In 1902, Eduard Glaser also mediated the acquisition of Yemeni manuscripts by the 'Bayrische Staatsbibliothek' (Bavarian State Library) which were offered by Giuseppe Caprotti (1862–1919), an Italian merchant who had lived more than 30 years in Ṣanʿāʾ.
