The author provides an overview of research on Yemen (pp. 29-77) carried out by German-speaking travellers such as Carsten Niebuhr (1761-63), Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1810), Adolf von Wrede (1943), Siegfried Langer (1881) and Eduard Glaser (1882-1894).
Dawani seeks to elaborate how those explorers viewed the Yemeni society and how they were perceived by the Yemenis. Chapter 3.3 (pp. 73-77) is dedicated to Eduard Glaser and his motivation to adopt a Muslim identity (Ḥusayn bin ʿAbd Allāh al-Birāqī) when travelling.
