Max Grünert (1849-1929), Professor of Semitic languages and literatures in Leipzig and Prague, deals with the death of Eduard Glaser, corresponding member of the 'Society for the Promotion of German Science, Art and Literature in Bohemia' on May 7th, 1908, and provides an overview of Glaser's achievements.
He highlights Glaser's innovative approach of teaching locals to produce squeezes of Ancient South Arabian inscriptions which enabled him to collect inscriptions from regions no European traveller had been allowed to enter. (p. 676)
Grünert furthermore stresses Glaser's merit of having procured rare and precious Arabic manuscripts which were acquired by the libraries in Berlin, London and Vienna.
Grünert describes Eduard Glaser as a peculiar character, 'appreciated only by a few who knew him closely; reserved and energetic, sometimes hard and sarcastic, and then again of a soft, deep and often childlike disposition'. (p. 677)
