In the first part of the article entitled 'Eduard Glasers Reise nach Mārib', the German orientalist Fritz Hommel (1854-1936) provides an overview of scientific achievements reached in the studies of the cultures of southern Arabia; furthermore, he deals with Eduard Glaser's account of the highlight of his third journey to Yemen (Oct. 1887 - Sept. 1888), i.e. the visit of the ancient Sabaean capital of Mārib (letter written on 26 March 1888 in Mārib and stamped on 20 April 1888 in ʿAden).
Eduard Glaser reports having managed to copy 391 inscriptions in Mārib including 100 longer texts. He further mentions that he travelled disguised as Muslim scholar with the assumed name of Faqīh Ḥusayn b. ʿAbdallāh al-Birāqī, meaning 'the scholar [...] from Prague and describes an attack by 30 assailants which he and his travel companions were able to fend off.
