The present publication contains an account of Eduard Glaser's journeys to Yemen based on a lecture given on October 26th, 1886 at the Imperial-Royal Geographical Society in Vienna.
The explorer narrates the challenges encountered at the beginning of his first trip with regard to the obtention of the 'ferman' (decree issued by the Ottoman sultan) which was granted to him thanks to the intervention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Baron Teschenberg, Count Kalnoky & Baron Calice).
He describes the flora and fauna of the region and provides an insight into the life and customs of Yemeni tribes. Furthermore, he comments on the living conditions of the poorest stratum of the Yemeni population, the 'Ahl el Khums', as well as those of the Jews.
The article ends with a description of Yemen's climate and its impact on the health of the population.
