After his return from his fourth journey to Yemen (January 1892 - March 1894) Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) gradually realised that it was impossible to edit all the inscriptions he had collected. Hence, he decided to publish at least the more important texts. Those undoubtedly included two inscriptions on the breach of the Mārib Dam which had been carved at the northern sluice of the Great Dam.
The two inscriptions in question bear the Glaser numbers - GL 554 consisting of 7 parts and covering 100 lines & - GL 618 covering 136 lines (for details refer to p. 5).
According to GL 554 (CIH 540), King Šaraḥbiʾil Yaʿfur had a thorough renovation works carried out in 449 / 450 CE (p. 20). According to GL 618 (CIH 541), another breach occurred in the dam under the rule of the Abyssinian viceroy Abraha in 542 CE (p. 68).
The inscriptions not only provide information on the high costs of repair in terms of workers, material and food, but also mention other important events of the time.
