In his response to an article published by the German scholar Fritz Hommel (1854-1936) on October 22nd, 1898, Eduard Glaser portrays the co-leader of the Austrian expedition to South Arabia Carlo Landberg (1848-1924) as a person enjoying excellent contacts with sheikhs from the coastal areas near Aden.
He points out that the latter's amicable relations do not extend to leaders in the interior of the country, emphasizing that the current volatile political situation however requires a sound knowledge of power relations in areas that are neither under British nor under Turkish control - a knowledge that the German-Swedish count does not possess in Glaser's view.
Eduard Glaser advises the members of the expedition to avoid disputed areas 'until conditions in Yemen are clarified'; (p. 6) he finishes his article criticizing the attitude of Fritz Hommel whom he reproaches of switching sides, i.e. praising Landberg's achievements and accusing him of scientific idleness.
... This article is followed by a statement of Fritz Hommel in which he justifies his judgement of Landberg's skills...
