This letter to the editor by Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) contains a rectification of the explorer's statements with regard to the expedition to South Arabia sponsored by the Austrian Imperial Academy of Sciences in 1898 under the leadership of David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912), Professor of Semitic Philology at the University of Vienna, and the German-Swedish orientalist Count Carlo Landberg (1848-1924).
Eduard Glaser rejects the allegation of having portrayed Count Landberg as a 'political agent of England' in an article published in the newspaper 'Allgemeine Zeitung' on Nov. 5th, 1898.
He emphasizes that his previous statements were not directed against the persons involved, but have to be read against the backdrop of the increasing confrontation between Yemenis and Turks which, in his view, is fuelled by the British.
As a result of the increased influence by the British in the Vilayet of Yemen, Europeans, regardless of their nationality, are perceived as 'belonging to the British'. Hence, Glaser warns against travelling to areas which are not under Turkish / British control such as the east of the Vilayet which is rich in inscriptions...
