This book deals with the research Dr. Wilhelm Hein (1861-1903) and his wife Marie carried out in southern Arabia during the years 1901-1902. Gertraud Sturm draws a vivid picture of the life and work of the couple by quoting from private letters and other documents of interest. The annex encompasses copies of handwritten letters of the couple, various notes and several sketches and illustrations.
Chapter 6 bearing the title 'Blütezeit der Orientalistik – Wegbereiter, Vorbilder, Anstoßgeber' (The heyday of Oriental Studies - pioneers, role models, initiators) - pp. 33-43 - contains short biographies of - Gustav Adolf von Wrede (1807-1863), - Leo Reinisch (1832-1919), - David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912), - Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), - Siegfried Langer (1857-1882), - Leo Hirsch (1866-??) - Alois Musil (1868-1944) - Maximilian Bittner (1869-1918) - Wyman G. Bury (1874-1920)
On Eduard Glaser's scientific achievements, Gertraud Sturm, drawing on Egon von Komorzynski's Glaser-biography, concludes: 'As a maverick, Glaser made groundbreaking contributions to the study of southern Arabia. It is therefore regrettable that his achievements were only known to a small circle of experts and remained largely unknown to the public for quite a long time.' (p. 38)
