Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) deals with the astronomical knowledge of the Yemeni tribes / Bedouins (referred to as the 'Kabylen'). The explorer and astronomer points out that the use of the stars not only serves the purpose of orientation / guidance in the interior of the Arabian Peninsula marked by a lack of paths. The stars also serve as time indicators and are an important reference for the highly developed agriculture.
Glaser's study contains designations for
- harvest seasons such as 'qiyāṭ' (until end of April), 'diṯā' (until mid-June), 'bikār' (until mid-August) and 'ṣurrāb' (until the end of December)
- seasons such as 'ṣeif', 'ḫarīf', 'šitā'
- months
- stars such as 'ʿaleibe', 'ʿalib',...
as well as a table to illustrate the calendar.
