The ancient dam of Mārib is considered one of the engineering wonders of the ancient world as it preserved the fame of Mārib down to the late Islamic period. Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) had the occasion to visit the remains of this marvel during his third journey to Yemen in 1888.
A detailed account of his trip from Ṣanʿāʾ to Mārib can be found in 'Eduard Glasers Reise nach Mârib' which was published five years after Glaser's death, i.e. in 1913.
Eduard Glaser makes reference to two inscriptions whose total of 236 lines allow to trace the final collapse of the dam. According to Glaser's reading, a breach occurred in 539. The final collapse must have occurred not long afterwards, transferring the fertile plain of Saba' into a barren desert (as described in the Qurʾān, XXXIV, 14).
