In the present volume, Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) traces the history of the Kingdom of Abyssinia with the aim to demonstrate that the origin of the Ethiopians (Ḥabašāt) is located in Arabia, concretely in Mahra.
Glaser states that the term 'ḥabašāt' was used on both sides of the Gulf of Aden, including Somaliland, to denote the collectors of aromatic roots and gums and that the name 'Ethiopian' may sometimes have been used to mean the same. His derivation is based on the south Arabian word 'ṭib/ṭaib', found in inscriptions to mean 'incense trade' (pp. 8-10). ...
Glaser inscriptions covered include: - GL1076 - GL1359 / 1360 - GL1155 - GL1083 - GL891 - GL138 - GL119 - GL424
