In this article, Walter Dostal (1928-2011) provides an outline of Eduard Glaser's life as a researcher, focusing on the main features of Glaser's personality that underlie his pioneering work.
Particular attention is given to Eduard Glaser's conflict with the Austrian semitist David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912), who had introduced him to the study of Ancient South Arabia and encouraged him to travel to Yemen - a conflict that was to dominate Glaser's entired life; it prevented the academic career he longed for and 'turned him into a man embittered by the blows of fate'. (pp. 19-20)
Walter Dostal also provides information on Eduard Glaser's pathbreaking method of training Yemeni locals in taking squeezes of ancient inscriptions, which enabled him to collect a total of 1,919 squeezes that provided an important impulse for the development of Sabaean studies. (p. 22)
