This article deals with the Ottomans' efforts of re-establishing themselves in the highlands of Yemen in response to urgent appeals from the reigning imam to provide military support for his effort to stay in office.
When Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) first arrived to Yemen in 1882, the 'vilayet' experienced a new period of turmoil. Efforts by the Ottomans to stabilize the country were eventually doomed to failure due to the greed of tribal leaders.
Reference is made to an interview by Eduard Glaser with the newspaper 'La Turquie' no. 95 (26.04.1884) in which the traveller reported that 'Ottoman control was now limited to the central highland, to a line from Luḥayyah to Ḥajjah and included ʿAmrān, Ṣanʿāʾ, Dhamār, Radaʿ, Qaʿtaba, and the region between Taʿizz and Mocha'.
