In this article, the German scholar Fritz Hommel (1854-1936) provides an overview of the scientific achievements in the field of South Arabian studies during the last two decades of the 19th century. He highlights the contributions of the Austrian professor of Semitic philology David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912) and Eduard Glaser: while D.H. Müller translated and commented ancient South Arabian inscriptions discovered by the French Scholar Joseph Halévy (1827-1917), Eduard Glaser collected important inscriptions including original stones which were acquired by the museums in London, Berlin and Vienna.
Hommel points out that the number of inscriptions collected by Eduard Glaser - incl. squeezes and original monuments - more than doubles the inscriptions copied by Halévy.
In his view, Eduard Glaser's fourth journey to Yemen, which was funded by institutions in Prague with the equivalent of 20,000 Reichsmark, is of particular importance, for the inscriptions Glaser collected also include texts in Qatabānic. Nonetheless, Hommel deplores that the publication of important texts such as the inscription discovered by Glaser at Ṣirwāḥ is long in coming.
It is against this backdrop that the author of the present article acclaims the initiative of Carlo Landberg (1848-1924), a Swedish aristocrat and orientalist, of organizing an expedition sponsored by the Vienna-based Imperial Academy of Sciences.
Hommel announces that this expedition is expected to start within the following days and to bring about groundbreaking finds from South Arabia since eminent scholars from various disciplines (geology, botany, zoology, ethnography, archaeology and linguistics) are on board...
