This article was published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Weihrauch und Seide. Alte Kulturen an der Seidenstraße' ('Frankincense and silk. Ancient Cultures on the Silk Road') held from January 21st to April 14th, 1996, at the 'Kunsthistorisches Museum' in Vienna.
Günther Dembski deals with ancient minting of coins in the area of today's Yemen, introducing his essay with the information that South Arabian numismatic studies are a relatively young discipline. The fact that the ancient coinage in the area of present-day Yemen had remained unexplored for a long time, and that even today there is a divergence of scholarly opinion regarding chronology and attribution, is, in the author's opinion, largely due to the rather sparse finds. (p. 57)
Within his four journeys through the Land of Frankincense, the epigrapher and explorer Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) succeeded in acquiring ancient South Arabian coins, 111 of which are held by the 'Coin Cabinet' of the 'Kunsthistorisches Museum' in Vienna.
