In this article, Elisabeth Monamy elaborates on the contribution of the erudite Yemeni coppersmith Ḥayyim Ḥabšūš (1839-1899) to the success of European explorers such as Joseph Halévy (1827-1917) and Eduard Glaser (1855-1908).
The author provides a short overview of Ḥabšūš' life and works (pp. 222); with regard to Eduard Glaser's role in shaping Ḥabšūš' travelogue 'Vision of Yemen', Monamy points out that it was the explorer from Bohemia who requested Ḥabšūš to put his experiences during the travels with Halévy on paper.
Monamy ponders the reasons why Ḥabšūš acceded to Glaser's request and concludes that he wanted a larger audience to know his contribution to Halévy's achievements, for the French scholar had completely ignored his native guide in his long and detailed travelogues, nor had he got in touch with him after his return to France.
