The Swedish orientalist Count Carlo Landberg (1848-1924), gives an account of the preparation and implementation of the Austrian expedition to South Arabia in 1898/99 which was sponsored by the Imperial Academy of Sciences.
Carlo Landberg was appointed as leader of the expedition to the interior of South Arabia - basically on account of his excellent knowledge of the territory. He had to share the overall responsibility of the expedition with David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912), Professor of Semitic philology at the University of Vienna and member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Due to an increasing conflict with Müller, Count Landberg eventually resigned from his position.
VOLUME I: With reference to an article published by Eduard Glaser on Nov. 5th, 1898, in the 'Allgemeine Zeitung' (p. 21) Landberg refutes Glaser's statements who accused him of having joined the Austrian expedition 'as an English agent'.
On the other hand, Landberg expresses a certain understanding for Glaser's statements which he believes are due to the way he had been treated by David Heinrich Müller: 'Now that I have seen through Prof. Müller's character, I am convinced that Dr. Glaser, whose services to the study of Yemen are undeniable, has been treated in the most ruthless manner by Prof. Müller.' (p. 83)
