In 1897, Eduard Glaser invited the budding Italian Arabist Eugenio Griffini (1878-1925) to Munich and introduced him to his work.
In this article, Eugenio Griffini provides an overview of Eduard Glaser's achievements, highlighting his discovery of approx. 2,000 Ancient South Arabian inscriptions as well as his approach for obtaining epigraphic material: the squeezes ('calchi' p. 411).
Griffini is particularly impressed by Eduard Glaser's astuteness and his courage in penetrating the interior of Yemen disguised as a Muslim jurist, using the assumed name Faqīh Ḥusayn b. ʿAbdallāh. (p. 411) He praises Glaser's good relations with the Ottoman authorities, notably with the governor-general of the vilayet of Yemen, Osman Nuri Pasha and the Yemeni tribes alike. (p. 412)
On behalf of the 'Società d'Esplorazione Commerciale in Africa' (Society for Commercial Exploration in Africa) which expects Glaser's visit, Griffini extends a warm welcome to the 'German' (p. 411) explorer.
