In this article, Valentina Sagaria Rossi deals with the life and scholarly work of the Italian Arabist Eugenio Griffini (1878-1925) through his correspondence with the Hungarian scholar of Islam Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921).
Griffini is known for having catalogued the important collection of Arabic Manuscripts held by the 'Biblioteca Ambrosiana' in Milan after securing the acquisition of 1,610 Yemeni codices from the Italian merchant Giuseppe Caprotti (1862–1919).
157 volumes of Caprotti's collection of manuscripts were sold to the' Königliche Hof- and Staatsbibliothek zu München' (Royal Court and State Library) (today's 'Bayrische Staatsbibliothek' - Bavarian State Library) through the mediation of Eduard Glaser.
Reference is made to Griffini's meeting with Eduard Glaser in 1897 who invited him to stay with him in Munich where he could examine the extensive epigraphic material collected by Glaser in Yemen. (p. 141)
The author also addresses the change in the relationship between Griffini, Caprotti and Glaser that resulted from Glaser's disapproval of the fact that the Caprotti collection was entrusted to Griffini and not to himself. (p. 143)
