This work is part of a multi-volume history of Austrian and Austro-Hungarian diplomatic institutions written by the Austrian diplomat Rudolf Agstner (1951-2016). The consulates in Aden and Jeddah illustrate the presence of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 19th century Arabia.
Chapter 1 contains excerpts from two letters by Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) to the Imperial and Royal Foreign Ministry which the explorer had written in 1882 and 1893 respectively. (pp. 14-15; 25)
In December 1882, i.e. during his first journey to Yemen (1882-1884), Glaser addressed a letter to the Imperial and Royal Foreign Ministry suggesting the establishment of an Imperial and Royal consular office in Hodeida.
Eleven years later, i.e. during his fourth (and last) journey to Yemen (January 1892-March 1894), Eduard Glaser wrote another letter to the Ministry in which he reported on his (negative) experiences with Angelo Gentilli, a consular official in Aden, who had committed suicide after going bankrupt.
