This article provides an overview of the final stage in the acquisition of Arabic manuscripts by the three public libraries in Germany holding the largest collections of Oriental manuscripts, namely the 'Berlin State Library' (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - PK), the 'Bavarian State Library' (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München, BSB) and the 'Gotha Research Library' (Forschungsbibliothek Gotha).
Regarding the collection of Arabic manuscripts purchased by the then Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin (Royal Library of Berlin) from Eduard Glaser in 1887, the author notes that the acquisition of the 241 volumes was only possible owing to a subsidy from the Prussian king. (p. 75)
The purchase of 157 Arabic manuscripts by the then Munich Royal Library from Eduard Glaser in 1902 was the second of two major acquisitions made by today's Bavarian State Library. It followed the purchase of the library of the French Orientalist Etienne-Marc Quatremère (1782 -1857), a professor at the 'Collège de France' and the 'École des langues orientales' in Paris, which enriched the collection of the 'Bayrische Staatsbibliothek' in 1858.
