This photo book by Marco and Margherita Cristallo traces the lives of Luigi Caprotti (1858-1889) and his younger brother Giuseppe (1862–1919). In 1885, Giuseppe Caprotti arrived in Ṣanʿāʾ in order to assist his brother in the management of the branch of the company 'Mazzucchelli & Perera' which Luigi had established upon his arrival in 1883.
In their capacity as representatives of the Ottoman Tobacco Regie, Luigi and Giuseppe became resource persons for a number of European travellers incl. Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), the French botanist Albert Deflers (1841–1921) or the German photographer Hermann Burchardt (1857–1909).
On January 10th, 1889, Luigi Caprotti died of an intestinal infection (p. 10). Giuseppe outlived Luigi by 30 years, remaining the only European resident in Ṣanʿāʾ who witnessed wars, sieges, famines etc. at close quarters (on which he reported in his letters - pp. 38, 39)
Caprotti corresponded with Eduard Glaser in both Italian and French: while they preferably used French for business matters, they sometimes switched to Italian when discussing the political situation in Yemen.
