Jens Willhardt's study aims at examining the perception of and the encounter with South Arabia. After a brief outline of the geography and history of Yemen (pp. 31-34), the author examines the representation of South Arabia in literature (pp. 35-175).
Willhardt notes that al-Hamdānī's description of the Arabian Peninsula - Ṣifat Ǧazīrat al-ʿArab - was a veritable 'treasure trove' to numerous travellers, in particular to Eduard Glaser. (p. 48) He also highlights the contribution of the Yemeni coppersmith Ḥayyim Ḥabšūš (1839-1899) to the mission of the French scholar Joseph Halévy (1827-1917), pointing out that it was Eduard Glaser who encouraged Ḥabšūš to put his experiences with Halévy on paper in the form of a travelogue. (p. 73)
As far as Eduard Glaser's perceptions of Yemen and the people living there are concerned, the author mainly quotes from 'Eduard Glasers Reise nach Mârib' which was published in 1913, i.e. five years after the death of the tireless explorer (1855-1908).
