After Fritz Hommel (1854-1936), professor of Semitic languages at the University of Munich, had published a review of Eduard Glaser's work 'Skizze der Geschichte und Geographie Arabiens' (vol. II) in the newspaper 'Allgemeine Zeitung' in 1890, he wrote another - in some aspects more detailed - review for the 'Historische Zeitschrift' in 1892.
'Of all the travellers who have so far penetrated the inaccessible interior of the Arabian Peninsula, ... , Eduard Glaser has achieved the most brilliant results' is the verdict of the German scholar with which he prefaces his book review. (p. 182)
Hommel emphasises the length of Glaser's sojourn in Mārib, which enabled him to collect 'a wealth of inscriptions that unfortunately still remain unprocessed', and praises Glaser's use of descriptions by ancient geographers and historians such as Strabo, Ptolemy or Pliny, as well as biblical references.
Special attention is also given to Glaser's examination of the 'place of the Minaeans in the History of Pre-Islamic Arabia' and his view of Ophir.
Hommel concludes his review as follows: 'It is only to be hoped that Glaser will soon complete the first volume, which deals only with the history of Arabia, and thus make it available to the public. Is such a fine work to remain a torso?' (p. 190)
