The present volume by the German-Jewish ethnographer, historian and Arabist Shlomo Dov Goitein (1900–1985) contains the translation of Hayyim Habshush's account of his travels with the French epigrapher Joseph Halévy (1827-1917) who had visited Yemen in 1869-1870 - a visit during which Halévy recorded 685 Sabaean inscriptions.
Habshush (1839-1899), a Yemeni Jewish coppersmith, compiled his memoir of the whole journey in 1893/94 at the instigation of Eduard Glaser (1855-1908). However, his story has not been published until 1941, i.e. not until Shlomo Dov Goitein pieced together several copies, held in Vienna and Jerusalem, as well as by the Chief Rabbi of the Jews in Ṣanʿāʾ.
Habshush had started writing his memoir in Hebrew but, later on, he switched to Judeo-Arabic, the Yemeni Arabic vernacular spoken by Jews in Yemen.
