This article traces the life and work of the explorer Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), highlighting the scholar's assiduity in studying not only Standard Arabic but also the Arabic varieties 'which he mastered like a native speaker'.
Special mention is made of Glaser's encounter with Wilhelm Juncker (1875–1886), a Russian explorer of German descent, in Tunis in 1882. Furthermore, the author emphasizes Glaser's merit in having published Sabaean inscriptions documenting the breach of the Mārib Dam.
He concludes: 'Dr Glaser's life's work has granted us the deepest insights into Ancient South Arabia, the religious history of many Semitic peoples as well as the geography of the lands they ruled. With his passing, Oriental Studies lost a scholar with an astonishing amount of knowledge.'
