Against the backdrop of the passing of Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), Dr. R. A. Körnig provides an outline on the scholar's professional career.
'With infinite diligence Glaser acquired standard and colloquial Arabic which he mastered as fluently as a native speaker.
'This rare knowledge enabled him to undertake difficult journeys into the interior of Arabia, which only a precise connoisseur of the language and customs of the Islamic countries can venture.'
'Following in the footsteps of the French scholar Joseph Halévy (1827-1917), he travelled to the realm of the Queen of Sheba in Yemen disguised as an impoverished Muslim scholar ('fakkih meskin') - a role that involved hundreds of prayers and ritual prescriptions for which he had to prepare for more than a year and which he often had to perform at the risk of his life. ...'
Körnig reports that Glaser ceded many valuable pieces and inscriptions that he had brought with him from Arabia and Syria to the museum in Constantinople. Glaser was honoured by the Sultan for his services to the Ottoman Empire.
'It was Glaser's secret grief that he was never appointed as professor at the University of Vienna. According to Körnig, the passing of this remarkable scholar of brilliant knowledge is a great loss for Oriental studies.'
