This obituary of Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), 'the most successful explorer of Arabia', written by Otto Weber (1877-1928), Assyriologist and director of the 'Vorderasiatisches Museum' (Museum of the Ancient Near East) from 1912 to 1928, which is part of the State Museums in Berlin, takes a look at Eduard Glaser's formative years in what is now the Czech Republic.
Moreover, Weber provides an overview of the results of Eduard Glaser's four journeys to Yemen (October 1882–March 1884, April 1885–February 1886, October 1887–September 1888 and January 1892– March 1894).
1st journey:
- 276 inscriptions
2nd journey:
- Minaean inscriptions & approx. 250 Arabic Manuscripts
3rd journey:
- 346 Arabic Manuscripts (sold to the British Museum), visit of Mārib in disguise as a Muslim scholar (faqīh) & collection of 391 Ancient South Arabian inscriptions in Mārib alone
4th journey:
- collection of more than 700 inscriptions (squeezes)...
Weber reports that Glaser's hope of obtaining the means for a carefree life in the service of science was not fulfilled and that the scholar's bitterness grew over the years: 'Even his most loyal friends sometimes suffered greatly from his pathologically increased mistrust.'
