Against the backdrop of the Italian-Yemeni treaty, signed in Ṣanʿāʾ on September 2nd, 1926, by which Italy recognized Imam Yaḥyā Muḥammad Ḥamīd ad-Dīn, as King of Yemen and acknowledged his claims to Aden, the author analyses the Italians' contribution to the knowledge of Yemen.
Before taking a closer look at the Italian explorers such as Renzo Manzoni, Giovanni Battista Rossi or Gaetano Benzoni, Cucinotta provides an overview of European travellers who visited Jemen, highlighting the explorations by
- Carsten Niebuhr (1763)
- Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1810)
- Charles J. Cruttenden (1838)
- Thomas-Joseph Arnaud (1843)
- Joseph Halévy (1869)
- Heinrich von Maltzan (1870)
- Charles Millingen (1873)
- Moses Wilhelm Shapira (1879) &
- Eduard Glaser (1882-1884, 1885-1886 e 1887-1888 --> omitting the fourth journey from 1892-1894!)). (p. 5)
Cucinotta also lists the travellers who 'fell victim to their zeal', i.e
- Siegried Langer
- Charles Huber
- Ulrich Jasper Seetzen &
- Gaetano Benzoni (p. 7)
Finally, special mention is made of the collections compiled by Italians --> first and foremost by Giuseppe Caprotti....
