Contents:
At the time of the publication of Harris' report on his travels in Yemen in 1893, the Ottoman Empire had seized much of the country in an attempt to re-establish control over the seaway routes leading to the Suez Canal.
A chapter of the first part provides an account of the effects of the rebellion of the Yemeni population against the Turks which reached its peak in the late 19th century. The second part of this work contains a thrilling narrative of Harris' travels and adventures in the country.
In his account of Yemen's history, the author acknowledges Eduard Glaser's contribution whose extensive research has given conclusive data 'not only to individual sovereigns but to whole dynasties, with the result ... that very considerable light has been thrown upon the early days of the Yemen.' (p. 29, further quotations on pp. 32 & 244)
