In this work, Swiss military historian Jean-Jacques Langendorf portrays dazzling personalities whose explorations have shaped some 600 years of history of the Austrian monarchy. These personalities involve Wilhelm von Tegetthoff (1827-1871), Julius von Payer (1841-1915), Archduke Ludwig Salvator (1847-1915), Alois Musil (1868–1944) or Eduard Glaser (1855-1908).
pp. 135-140 deal with the journeys undertaken by Eduard Glaser and provide an insight into the explorer's career which was marked by a constant struggle for recognition by his peers.
Unlike many other travellers attracted to the land of the legendary Queen of Sheba, Glaser was 'thoroughly prepared, well organised, equipped with a profound knowledge and an iron will. In brief, he was anything but a 'fantasist'. (p. 136)
Glaser longed for an academic career, but the fact that he had not completed his studies and the sharpness of his polemics in his works earned Glaser widespread isolation in the scholarly community which, eventually, prevented him from receiving appropriate recognition for his remarkable achievements.
