This article deals with the results of the VII International Congress of Orientalists which took place in Vienna from September 27th to October 2nd, 1886. (to be continued --> see part II, published on October 13th, 1886)
The author points out that of the large number of registered lectures, several that would have been of particular interest were not given, as the contributors either did not come or cancelled their lecture. Thus neither Joseph Halévy (1827-1917), nor Ármin Vámbéry (1832-1913), nor Johannes Heinrich Mordtmann (1852-1932), nor Friedrich Delitzsch (1850-1922), nor Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) took part in the congress, with the result that little attention was paid to Semitic epigraphy ...
