This article is part of a volume dealing with the history of the Oriental collections held by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library).
Christoph Rauch focuses on the actors involved in building the holdings: the collectors of Oriental manuscripts, such as scholars, sales agents and antiquarians, but also librarians, compilers of manuscript catalogues and political decision-makers.
Chapter X. of this article is devoted to Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) who was dependent on the sale of his collections of manuscripts and antiquities to carry out his research in Yemen.
He sold a collection of 23 manuscripts originating from his first trip (October 1882-April 1884) to the then 'Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin' for 2,500 marks. (p. 130)
Two and a half years later, the library acquired a further 241 manuscripts for 20,000 marks (p. 133) which Glaser had collected in the course of his second trip to Yemen (April 1885 - February 1886).
The collection from Glaser's third trip (October 1887 - September 1888) was acquired by the British Museum Library for £ 1,350 after the negotiations with Königliche Bibliothek had come to a nought, wheras the manuscripts from Glaser's fourth trip passed into the possession of then 'Hofbibliothek' in Vienna.
