Gedalje Rosenmann describes in detail the stages in the career of David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912), professor of Semitic philology at the University of Vienna, where he became one of the greatest scholars of Oriental studies of his time.
The author emphasises Müller's role in promoting archaeological exploration of the Arabian peninsula, especially his encouragement of adventuresome and courageous students of Jewish background such as Siegfried Langer (1857–1882) and Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) to obtain ancient South Arabian inscriptions.
While Langer had to pay for his courage with his life, when he was murdered north of Aden in May 1882 (p. 155), Glaser succeeded in bringing back to Europe large quantities of epigraphic material that had not been seen by human eyes until then.
In the last years of his life, which were filled with restless activity, Müller devoted himself with particular zeal to sifting and publishing of Eduard Glaser's scientific estate, acquired by the Imperial Academy of Vienna at his behest. Unfortunately, he did not live to see the completion of this work. A persistent illness from which he could no longer recover had finally put an end to his work.
