This article covers the acquisition of Eduard Glaser's collection of 241 Arabic manuscripts originating from his second trip to Yemen (April 1885 - February 1886) by the then 'Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin' (Royal Library in Berlin), present-day 'Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin'.
The author of this article notes that 'it can now be claimed that the Royal Library is probably the only European institution in possession of a large collection of manuscripts coming directly from the Arabian Peninsula'.
He points out that Glaser's discovery of the hiding places of rare manuscripts is mainly due to his outstanding knowledge of the land, people, language and customs of South Arabia - a knowledge that surpasses that of his predecessors.
He also emphasises that the operation of bringing the collection to Europe was life-threatening, since 'most of the manuscripts
are regarded by 'the little-enlightened Arabs from the country's interior' as sacred objects that must not pass into the possession of people of other faiths. ...
