This work covers the history and present state of Jewish monuments in Bohemia. A comprehensive general introduction provides information on the historical development of Jewish settlement (p.16), Jewish ghettos (p. 30), synagogues (p. 48) and cemeteries (p.65), while a list of 300 alphabetical entries gives an overview of the specific sites dealt with. An important contribution of this publication is the extensive collection of photographs taken between 2002-2004.
The entry on Podbořanský Rohozec (formerly: Deutsch Rust or Teutschenrust) (pp. 300-301), the birthplace of Eduard Glaser (1855-1908), contains a brief history of the municipality, its synagogue and cemetery.
Eduard Glaser (p. 454) is portrayed as ''a traveller and Arabist; he studied mathematics and geodesy in Prague and astronomy in Vienna. In his youth he undertook foot marches to Paris, worked for several years at the Vienna Observatory, then as a tutor in Tunis, where he acquired a perfect command of the Arabic language.
In various Arab countries he was engaged in the study of ancient inscriptions. Later, Glaser settled in Munich, from where he made small trips every year, but mainly devoted himself to the processing of the material he had collected. His scientific estate was mainly acquired by the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, while some of the Arabic manuscripts and antiquities were acquired by German institutions; some of his collections passed into the possession of libraries in Berlin, London and Vienna.
