In his review of David Heinrich Müller's edition of al-Hamdānī's 'Ṣifat Ǧazīrat al-ʿArab, Aloys Sprenger (1813-1893), Professor of oriental languages, notes: 'It is impossible to produce an impeccable Hamdānī text, for there is evidence that it did not emerge without flaws from the author's hand.'
With regard to Eduard Glaser's criticism of Müller's work, Sprenger concedes that 'Glaser has great merits. He has exposed himself to unspeakable hardships and dangers in order to collect South Arabian inscriptions, and his name - like that of Arnaud, the first European to penetrate as far as Mārib - will be mentioned with honour in the history of science.'
Yet, Sprenger claims that Glaser has no knowledge of the geography of Arabia beyond the parts of the country he has seen himself. (p. 383; he quotes passages from Glaser's 'Skizze der Geschichte und Geographie Arabiens von den ältesten Zeiten bis zum Propheten Muhammad' (vol. II) which he considers inaccurate in order to substantiate his observations. ...
