This article deals with the exploration of Yemen by German travellers, starting with Hans Wild, who reached the Yemeni coast in 1604 at the age of 20 after having been captured as a lansquenet of the imperial forces in Hungary and sold as a slave to a Turk.
The author emphasizes the pioneering work of - Carsten Niebuhr (1761-63), mathematician, cartographer and explorer in the service of Denmark, - Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1767-1811), who brought handwritten copies of ancient Arabic inscriptions to Europe for the first time, and - Adolf von Wrede (1807-1863), who succeeded in reaching the borders of Hadhramaut.
According to the author, it is thanks to the explorations of Eduard Glaser (1855-1908) that European research on Yemen experienced a strong upswing towards the end of the 19th century.
'Glaser travelled the country four times between 1882 and 1894, visiting the most important places in the highlands, in the coastal plain and in the area between the cities of Ta'izz and Aden as well as Ma'rib and describing them to the interested public in Austria and Germany in more detail than any traveller before him.' ...
